Nearly 4,000 passengers stranded in Matnog port

At least 3,682 passengers are currently stranded in the port of Matnog in Sorsogon.

This comes, as the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) prohibited all types of sea travel in areas affected by typhoon “Nina.”

Sorsogon is under signal number 1 as of Saturday noon.

At 6 am, authorities estimated the number of passengers who initially trooped to ports all over the country, hoping to take rides, at more than 26,000.

PCG OIC Commodore Joel Garcia says, ports where sea travel is barred at this time include Matnog in Sorsogon, Allen in Samar, Albay and Catanduanes.

“Mas maigi na yung mag-overreact ang Coast Guard kaysa mag-underreact (better for Coast Guard to over-react than ‘under-react’),” Garcia explains.

Bad weather has prevented the operations of at least 392 roll-on, roll-off vessels (Roros),  17 other vessels and 6 motor bancas in areas affected by the typhoon.
