A season for the young

Young people in this country make up more than half the population. Filipinos aged 30 years and below stand to reap the rewards—or the consequences—of the decisions we make or refuse to make today.

But they are not passive recipients of whatever we do.

Some of them are portrayed rather unfairly. For instance, millennials are accused of being too focused on themselves, restless, entitled to privileges, and having things too easy.

What is not said however is that the previous generation had a lot to do with the way the youth behave. If they feel entitled to privileges, it is because we raised them to believe so perhaps in a desire to give them better options than we ever had.

Today’s young have plenty of energy and attention to spare. Social media may be a skewed barometer, especially since not every Filipino household has access to the internet. Still, current developments in politics and governance tell us the youth can be informed and engaged if they want.

We must make them want to.

It is said the holidays are for the young. Let us not underestimate them and believe that they are only after the trimmings, the presents, the perks and privileges of the season. It is up to their elders to encourage their participation. Tell them the truth —no lies, no euphemisms. Engage them in conversation. Seek out their opinion. Give them room to express themselves and allow them to defend their positions.

With this, perhaps we can feel better about the coming years—however big, daunting and threatening the challenges may appear now.
