PNP Chief Ronald Dela Rosa cried during the Senate hearing on Wednesday that investigated the death of Albuera, Leyte Mayor Rolando Espinosa.
This comes after he talked about the trust he gives to his fellow policemen and in replying to the questions from Senator Miguel Zubiri.
The PNP Chief said, “hindi ko na rin alam kung sino ang dapat na paniwalaan. Like what happened kay (Albuera, Leyte PNP Chief) Jovie Espenido. Siya yung pinagtitiwalaan ko. I was told he would really fight to the last drop of his blood. Tapos, sinasabi ni Kerwin (Espinosa), tumatanggap ng pera.”
Dela Rosa was seated beside Espinosa who testified and identified some police officials who are allegedly drug protectors.
In tears, Dela Rosa said, “pinasasa-Diyos ko na ang PNP. Mahal na mahal ko ang organisasyon. Sabi ko, if you survive the PMA (referring to the Philippine Military Academy), you will survive the world.”
He said, in the campaign against illagal drugs, “sabi ko sa Presidente, hindi ko ito uurungan. Hindi kita iiwanan sa labang ito. (I told the President, we won’t withdraw from this. I won’t leave you in this fight).”
He said even if several policemen are linked to illegal drug trade, "marami pa ring mga pulis ang mapapagkatiwalaan (there are still so many cops who can be trusted).”
He further said, “nahihirapan na kami. But please understand. Tao lang kami. Pero hindi ko sinasabi na gawin yang excuse dahil ako, galing din ako sa hirap. Hindi ko gagawin yan kahit magutom ang pamilya ko (we are having a hard time. We are just humans. But this should not be used as an excuse. I also come from a poor background. I won’t do that even if my family goes hungry).”
As for policemen who remain clean and are fighting illegal drugs, he declared, “we will survive. We will survive.”
