THE Sandiganbayan has ordered the arrest of former Misamis Oriental governor Antonio Calingin for failure to defend the malversation case filed against him September.
The anti-graft court’s second division, in its arrest warrant order, said Calingin must be arrested at the soonest possible time to start serving his sentence following a Supreme Court decision denying his motion for reconsideration for his conviction for malversation.
The Sandiganbayan meted Calingin a minimum of 10 years and one day of imprisonment to a maximum of 18 years, eight months and one day for malversation in December 2014.
He was found guilty of “cannibalization” of two Toyota 4×4 Hi-Lux which were assigned to him as service vehicles during his incumbency as governor from 1998 to 2004.
Calingin was also ordered to pay a fine of P2,082,385.00 or the amount equivalent to the property embezzled even as he was slapped with perpetual disqualification from holding public office.
The anti-graft court also asked Calingin to indemnify the province of Misamis Oriental in the total amount of P2,082,385.00.
