A NEW low pressure area east of Luzon island has little chance of turning into a storm but the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration reported that an incoming tropical cyclone [international name: Chaba] may spur rains in the country.

Pagasa forecaster Dennison Estareja said tropical cyclone Chaba will likely enter the Philippine Area of Responsibility while the LPA dissipates on Saturday.

Luzon can expect some cloudiness and light rains since the LPA, which is enhancing the southwest monsoon.

“That LPA is very near land already and has a low chance of intensifying into a tropical cyclone,” he said.

The LPA and Chaba will both be inside PAR this Saturday, Estareja said, but they can’t affect each other since the weather systems are about 1,500 kilometers apart.

“Those weather systems won’t interact with each other,” he said, noting that there is a possibility of fair weather in Luzon this weekend.

On Friday, the weather bureau located the LPA some 230 km. east of Cagayan province’s Tuguegarao City as of 10 a.m.

The habagat weakened but light to moderate rains and isolated thunderstorms can still be experienced over Metro Manila, Ilocos region, the Cordilleras, Cagayan Valley, Central Luzon, Calabarzon and Mindoro province, the bureau said.

The bureau also located Chaba some 1,500 km. east of Southern Luzon on Friday, packing maximum winds of 85 kph and gustiness of 105 kph and moving west-northwest at 20 kph.
