BRANDON Vera made history last year after scoring a 26-second knockout against Paul Cheng in the ONE Championship: Spirit of Champions, allowing him to keep the championship gold strapped around his waist.

Now, Vera is even more determined to hold on to the belt as he defends his ONE Championship heavyweight title on Dec. 2 against a still undetermined opponent.

“I don’t know when I’ll be fighting, but I’ve been training already since I’ve been here in the Philippines,” said Vera on Tuesday, during an open MMA workout at the Mall of Asia, Music Hall.

Nicknamed ‘The Truth,’ Vera pointed out that he made the choice of staying in the Philippines for good, so that he would be able to prepare for a fight to defend his title.

“When I made the decision to move to the Philippines, I wasn’t just relocating physically. I was relocating emotionally and spiritually,” he added.

In an effort to give back to his Filipino supporters, Vera is also imparting his mixed martial arts knowledge to those who want to learn the sport.

Bantamweight standout Mark “Mugen” Striegl and Team Lakay Warriors Eduard Folayang and Joshua Pacio attended the MMA event as well and showcased their various striking and grappling skills.

The crowd was both entertained and educated when Vera and Folayang reenacted the epic showdown between Vitaly Bigdash and Igor Svirid, while Pacio and Striegl demonstrated world-class combat techniques and self-defense tips.

“The fans are really passionate and know their MMA. We can’t wait to be back later this year for another awesome night of fights,” said ONE Vice President Rich Franklin.

Vera hopes to continue giving back to his Filipino supporters and hopefully create more champions in the Philippines.
