Davao to build new landfills

DAVAO CITY—The City Environment and Natural Resources Office (Cenro) has proposed the establishment of sanitary landfills at a cost of P50 million.

Cenro chief, engineer Eliza Madrazo said her office submitted its proposal to the City Administrator’s Office for review.

Madrazo said the current sanitary landfill at New Carmen, Tugbok is good only for the next two years.

She said the P50-million budget is only for the projected landfills in the city, since they are still looking for other possible locations.

The Cenro chief said that they are proposing to establish two landfills in Davao.

“We are proposing to have two landfills, one in the north and the other one in the southern part of the city,” Madrazo said.

When opened, the two landfills will also lessen the work load of the garbage collectors since they will not need to travel far to reach the sanitary landfill in the southern part of metro Davao, she said.

Meanwhile, Madrazo said, the proposed waste to energy project of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (Jica) will be a big boost to the city waste management.

She said that if the project were pursued, the lifespan of sanitary landfills will extend to 10 to 15 years, instead of only five years.

The Cenro collects over 600 tons of garbage everyday, said Madrazo.
