Motorcycle Development Program Participants Association, a group of Japanese motorcycle manufacturers, said Thursday it expects sales to rise 30 percent to 1.1 million units this year from 850,509 units in 2015.

MDPPA president Rodel Pablo said the introduction of affordable but reliable motorcycle models propelled the sales performance of the group. “What we originally forecast was as much as 15 percent increase in sales in 2016. But the economy seems to have improved significantly in the first half since sales practically went up by 42 percent,” Pablo said in a news briefing in Makati City.

The group said sales in the first half already reached 544,699 units, up from 382,365 units sold a year ago. It said in terms of motorcycle type, the moped model or the underbone motorcycle sold the most number of units in the first half of 2016, overtaking the business models category that led the growth in the first semester of 2015.
