Davaoeños urged to grow veggies

DAVAO CITY—The City Agriculture Office is working to make Davao the organic container gardening center of the country, said CAO head Leo Brian Leuterio.

The CAO will introduce organic urban gardening to Davaoeños despite the limited space in the residential, office and other parts of the city for vegetables and other backyard crops.

“We want to encourage urban organic gardening on top of buildings, in garages, in parking lots and even in the private and government offices,” Leuterio said.

He said they would like to change the mentality of the people that organic gardening requires a large space.

Leuterio said their project will also promote organic gardening.

The CAO is working hand-in-hand with the Department of Agriculture in helping the farmers ensure food security in the city.

“We are currently making sure that the farmers are predictably producing their products, despite the climate change and other eventualities,” the CAO chief said.

He said they are now scanning and identifying areas in the city that are affected by La Niña, to counter the farmers’ possible loss of income.

The CAO also encouraged the barangays to continue the Gulayan sa Barangay to make the communities self-sufficient in vegetables.

Davao City still produces high-value crops such as cacao, coconut, banana and pineapple.
