China’s overall economy is slowing but there is still explosive growth in its entertainment sector. China is set to be the world’s biggest market for movies. It overtook North America at the box office for the first time this year. And that means Hollywood has to mind the censors if it wants a piece of the action.
In this month’s On China, CNN’s Kristie Lu Stout is in Shanghai, where the highly anticipated new Disneyland has just opened. She speaks with leading Chinese director Lu Chuan; Irish Times correspondent and former Asia Bureau Chief for The Hollywood Reporter, Clifford Coonan; and Wall Street Journal correspondent James T. Areddy. In the course of the talk show they discuss the condition of China’s entertainment industry, the risk factor behind Disneyland’s biggest foreign investment, and the future of movie making in the country.
On China airs on CNN International on June 23 at $:30 p.m. in Manila, Hongkong, Beijing, Kuala Lumpur, Singapore and Taipe with replays at different times until July 24.
