Globe Telecom Inc. said Thursday it teamed up with the Transportation Department to install wireless Internet infrastructure at Metro Rail Transit Line 3 to improve the mobile broadband connectivity of commuters.

The Ayala-led telco said it signed a memorandum of understanding with Metro Railway Transit, an attached agency of the Transportation Department to deploy wireless internet infrastructure at all MRT Line 3 stations along Edsa.

“With the support of government agencies such as the operators of MRT Line 3, we hope to change the experience of our customers in high foot traffic areas and strategic locations such as public transport systems,” Globe senior vice president for program governance, network technical group Joel Agustin said.

Agustin said the project would help address existing challenges on mobile signals along Edsa especially during rush hours.

The additional capacity brought  by the macro sites and small cells deployment will help decongest peripheral areas around the train stations, providing improved mobile experience to customers, Globe said.

The company said in addition to expanding network capacities in major areas with commuter traffic, it would also provide free Wi-Fi services at all MRT Line 3 stations.

This is expected to benefit 350,000 commuters would would have free Wi-Fi access for 30 minutes daily, it said.

Globe allocated $750 million for 2016 capital expenditures, bulk of which will be used to boost data capacity and expand network reach.

Globe also launched early this year an initiative to create an internet superhighway by deploying fiber optic cables in 20,000 barangays all over the country to provide faster and more reliable internet access in 2 million homes nationwide.

The infrastructure build is expected to take five years and will extend network coverage to more areas that currently have no connection or spotty service.

Globe earlier reported a net income of P4.34 billion in the January to March period, up by 3 percent from P4.15 billion last year.

Revenues increased 14 percent in the three-month period to P29.9 billion from P26.2 billion a year earlier.
