It’s a new era for Taiwan after a landslide victory for Tsai Ing-wen, its first female president. And now, the hard work begins. Tsai faces a stagnating economy, a complicated relationship with Beijing, and a generation of young political activists empowered by the “Sunflower Movement”.
Tsai’s Party has traditionally leaned in favor of independence, a highly contentious issue. Plus, China views Taiwan as a breakaway province that could be taken back, by force, if necessary. So what does the election mean for Taiwan, its people and its relations with Beijing?
