BAGUIO CITY—The Senate committee on energy supports individual and collective initiatives to shift from the use of traditional energy sources to renewable energy like solar, wind and hydro, the committee vice chairman Senator Teofisto Guingona III said as he witnessed the installation of standalone solar-powered lamps near the Baguio Cathedral.

This is in order to contribute to overall efforts of both the government and the private sector to sustain and preserve the state of the environment in the country.

Guingona said the use of solar-powered lamps in Baguio should already jump-start the individual and collective efforts to entice the public to shift from traditional energy sources to renewable energy in order to enhance efforts to preserve and protect the environment.

“Every little step counts, that is why we need the individual and collective contribution of the populace to be able to achieve a bigger goal of converting the City of Baguio into the first solar power city in the country,” Guingona said.

The senator also expressed his gratitude to the Diocese of Baguio for opening up the Baguio Cathedral for the installation of the solar power lamps to showcase the benefits of using renewable energy, saying that solar power will definitely help in reducing the power expenses of the church.

He encouraged more local residents and businesses to emulate the good deeds of the Baguio Cathedral in allowing its perimeters to showcase solar powered lamps to rally the  support of residents.
