The Philippines could record up to 90,000 COVID-19 cases by the end of the month—higher by 5,000 cases from the previous estimate of experts from the University of the Philippines.

Mathematics professor Dr. Guido David, a member of the UP OCTA Research group, said they had to adjust their earlier projection of 85,000 cases by end-July as the caseload of new COVID-19 patients continued to surge, particularly in the National Capital Region.

The Palace earlier warned that if cases hit 85,000 by August 1, lockdown protocols for the National Capital Region may be upgraded from General Community Quarantine to Modified Enhanced Community Quarantine.

David said the number of infections could reach up to 140,000 by the end of August.

"The caseload is not going down but in Cebu, the curve has already been flattened. In the National Capital Region, though, the trend is going up, along with Calabarzon.
