Making recognition more relevant in the workplace today

By Melville Brooks, Director of Talent Management of Omega Healthcare Philippines

Recognition has long played a role in employee satisfaction. What has changed is how employees expect to experience it, particularly within a multigenerational workforce with evolving expectations of leaders.

Data from WorkL’s Global Workplace Report 2025 shows that satisfaction with reward and recognition among Filipino employees stands at 79 percent, a slight decrease from 80 percent previously. While the change is minimal, it offers useful insight. Recognition continues to matter, yet traditional approaches may no longer fully align with employee expectations.

For talent and HR leaders, this serves as a signal to reassess how recognition is designed, delivered, and experienced across the organization, with growing emphasis on approaches that go beyond annual recognition and purely monetary rewards.

Move away from infrequent and formal recognition

Recognition that happens only during annual reviews or formal ceremonies no longer reflects employee expectations today. Employees contribute every day, often under time pressure and high expectations. When recognition is delayed, its impact weakens.

More frequent and simple acknowledgment helps sustain motivation. Small moments of appreciation for everyday effort can be just as meaningful as large awards. These moments reinforce that progress, collaboration, and consistency are noticed, not just results.

Make recognition personal and purpose-driven

Recognition is most effective when it goes beyond general praise. Employees respond better when acknowledgment is clear about the contribution being recognized and the impact it has created.

When appreciation is anchored on shared values or goals, it becomes more meaningful. It helps reinforce the behaviors organizations want to see consistently; while giving employees a clearer sense of how their work supports team priorities and business outcomes.

Design recognition for a diverse workforce

An effective recognition approach should reach employees across roles, functions, and levels. Frontline teams, support functions, and leaders contribute in different ways, yet each plays a role in achieving results.

Recognition needs to be accessible, fair, and easy to understand, regardless of position. Clear criteria and consistent processes help build trust and ensure that recognition feels credible and inclusive.

Make recognition a leadership practice

Recognition should be part of everyday leadership, not a separate initiative. When leaders regularly acknowledge effort and outcomes, appreciation becomes part of the workplace culture.

Consistent and visible recognition helps keep teams engaged. It also sets the tone for peer acknowledgment, encouraging collaboration and reinforcing shared standards across teams.

Recognizing employees the Omega Healthcare way

At Omega Healthcare, recognition is treated as an ongoing practice rather than a one-time event. Across our Manila and Cebu operations, the focus is on acknowledging effort in ways that are timely, fair, and aligned with our values.

Recognition goes beyond monetary rewards. Alongside structured incentives, there is a strong emphasis on everyday appreciation. Peer-to-peer recognition allows employees to acknowledge colleagues who demonstrate teamwork, initiative, and shared values. This helps build a culture where appreciation is part of daily work, not limited to formal settings.

Leaders also play an active role. Instant recognition tools enable managers and next-level leaders to appreciate team members as contributions happen. This immediacy helps reinforce positive behaviors and ensures effort does not go unnoticed.

More structured platforms complement these everyday moments. Quarterly and annual recognition initiatives provide opportunities to highlight consistent performance and collaboration across roles and functions. Clear criteria and transparent processes help ensure recognition remains inclusive and credible.

As workplaces continue to change, recognition must keep pace. When appreciation is timely, clear, and consistent, it reinforces the right behaviors and strengthens engagement. When done well, meaningful recognition becomes part of everyday work and a steady driver of employee satisfaction.
