Heavy rainfall resulted in flooding on major thoroughfares in Quezon City on Saturday, August 30.
In an advisory, the Quezon City local government said head-deep flooding was recorded at Daang Tubo in Brgy. UP Campus; Tabing Ilog St. Kaingin Bukid in Brgy. Apolonio Samson, and Lower Mangga St. in Brgy. Katipunan.
The Post Office NIA Road in Brgy. Pinyahan saw neck-deep floodwaters while parts of barangays Katipunan, Phil-Am, Roxas, NS Amoranto, North Fairview and Matandang Balara logged chest-deep floods.
As of press time, the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority also declared the areas of Commonwealth Avenue near the University of the Philippines Gymnasium in Diliman, as well as both lanes of the Quezon Avenue EDSA Tunnel, not passable for all types of vehicles due to waist-deep water levels.
The MMDA said the outdated drainage system in Metro Manila is part of the flooding problem.
The agency said the recorded volume of rainwater from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday reached 105 mm.
Rivers overflowed and small culverts were inundated by the volume of water, resulting in rapid flooding in numerous areas of Quezon City.
In comparison to Typhoon “Ondoy” in September 2009, the rainfall recorded over a six-hour period amounted to 455 mm, which is equivalent to 75.83 mm/hour.
