The Office of the Presidential Adviser on Peace, Reconciliation, and Unity (OPAPRU) and Mindanao State University (MSU) General Santos City have signed agreements to introduce the “GAWAD KALINAW: Student Peace Leadership Award,” recognizing graduating students who have contributed to peacebuilding in their communities.
The award aims to inspire others to engage in peace efforts and will be launched by July next year. MSU is striving to become a “University of Peace” and is known for offering peace education courses.
In addition to the award, the two institutions are establishing the “Kalinaw Center,” which will serve as a hub for peace education, interfaith dialogue, and peace programs in Mindanao.
The center will focus on youth development and provide training in peacebuilding and livelihood skills. Construction of the center is expected to begin in the second half of 2025, with a budget of P50 million.
Dr. Monsour A. Pelmin, Director of the Institute for Peace and Development in Mindanao at MSU-General Santos City, explained that the purpose of the award is to recognize these students and encourage others to engage in peacebuilding. “The award aims to encourage students to actively participate in mainstreaming the culture of peace,” he said.
