The Philippine National Police (PNP) described 2025 as a year marked by major operations, controversies, and institutional changes that placed the police force at the center of national attention.
Early in the year, the PNP mourned the death of Col. Pergentino Malabed, who was killed in a plane crash near Reagan National Airport in Washington, D.C., while on official travel.
The PNP also reported a significant drop in crime, with focus crimes declining by more than 26 percent during the first two months of the year compared with the same period in 2024.
One of the most consequential events occurred in March, when police arrested former president Rodrigo Duterte upon his arrival at Ninoy Aquino International Airport, triggering protests and heightened security operations.
Throughout the year, the PNP managed election-related security, leadership changes, high-profile investigations, and internal disciplinary actions, including the dismissal of erring personnel.
Despite challenges, the PNP said it remains committed to strengthening public safety, improving police response, and upholding accountability as it moves beyond 2025.
