The death toll from the magnitude 6.9 earthquake that struck Bogo City, Cebu, on September 30 has climbed to 74, according to the latest report from the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) released Thursday morning.
The agency said 559 individuals were injured, while 666,439 people or 189,620 families in Central Visayas have been affected by the powerful quake. Of these, 7,813 individuals remain displaced.
The tremor triggered several secondary incidents, including landslides, structural fires, collapsed structures, and a chemical leak.
A total of 71,996 houses were damaged — 67,027 partially and 4,969 totally — along with 706 public infrastructures. The earthquake also affected eight road sections and 20 bridges across the region.
Power interruptions persist in 48 of 91 affected areas, while water supply issues continue in one of eight affected localities. Communication lines remain unstable in 10 of 17 affected areas.
Meanwhile, operations are still suspended in two of the three affected seaports, while classes in 115 areas and work schedules in 29 areas have also been halted.
A state of calamity persists over the entire province of Cebu.
The NDRRMC said that P152.68 million worth of assistance has been distributed to affected residents.
Meanwhile, as of 12 p.m. Thursday, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) reported 10,006 aftershocks, 44 of which were felt, with magnitudes ranging from 1.0 to 5.1.
