Every August 28, the town of Tanza bursts with life as devotees gather to honor San Agustin—fondly called Tata Usteng—the patron saint of the Diocesan Shrine of Saint Augustine Parish in Sta. Cruz. For the faithful, Tata Usteng is believed to be a miraculous saint who listens to prayers and grants wishes through God’s blessing. What started as a simple local tradition has grown into a grand annual celebration, attracting not only Tanzeños but also visitors from different towns and cities across Luzon.
Eight years ago, Kapuso Mo, Jessica Soho (KMJS) featured Tata Usteng, further highlighting his deep devotion among the faithful. The program revealed that the sacred image has been under the care of the family of Teodora Sosa Tandoc for more than 200 years, carefully preserved and passed down from generation to generation. This enduring guardianship reflects the strong devotion that continues to inspire countless believers.

The same feature showcased testimonies of miracles attributed to Tata Usteng—stories of how the image mysteriously moves, heals the sick, appears in unexpected ways, and fulfills the prayers of the faithful. These accounts strengthened his reputation as one of the most revered and beloved saints in Cavite, with thousands of devotees faithfully celebrating his feast every year.
In 2025, the devotion to Tata Usteng remains as strong as ever. The only change is the growing number of devotees who come together on his feast day. A week before August 28, the local government organizes various activities for the community, such as a documentary film contest, jamming sessions, the traditional karakol, and dance competitions. This year’s celebration is made even more special by the presence of His Eminence Luis Antonio G. Cardinal Tagle, D.D., who is set to preside over a solemn Mass on August 27, 2025.

Beyond the festivities, the feast of Tata Usteng is a testament to the unwavering faith of the people. For many, it is not only a time of merrymaking but also of thanksgiving, reflection, and prayer. Families reunite, friends reconnect, and strangers come together with one devotion, creating bonds that go beyond the event itself.
The celebration also strengthens unity, as everyone—young and old, locals and visitors alike—shares the same belief in Tata Usteng’s miraculous works. Stories of answered prayers and healing serve as a reminder that faith can bridge differences and bring people together as one community.

As the years pass, one truth remains certain: the devotion to Tata Usteng will never fade. His feast day is more than a celebration of miracles; it is a celebration of faith, hope, and unity. For the countless devotees who return year after year, Tata Usteng continues to be a symbol of God’s grace, a source of strength, and a unifying figure who brings hearts together in prayer and thanksgiving.
