Globe Telecom donates scam-detection tools

Globe Telecom Inc. donated International Mobile Subscriber Identity (IMSI) catcher detectors to several government agencies to strengthen the country’s defense against mobile-based scams and fraudulent activities.

The devices were provided to the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC), the Cybercrime Investigation and Coordinating Center (CICC) and the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG). The technology allows authorities to identify and locate fake base stations in real time, which is expected to improve enforcement speed in high-risk and densely populated areas.

“The threats we are seeing today operate at a deeper level, and addressing them requires stronger systems and closer coordination,” Globe Group general counsel Froilan Castelo said.

Castelo said the company views it as a responsibility to ensure connectivity remains safe and secure for Filipinos.

Telecommunications providers face evolving tactics from fraudsters using unauthorized signal activity to bypass traditional network security. By using these detectors, the NTC and law enforcement can gain visibility into localized threats that were previously difficult to track.

“What this initiative enables is visibility where it matters most,” Globe chief AI officer and chief information security officer Anton Bonifacio said.

“By detecting unauthorized signal activity, we can support faster investigation and response, which is critical in addressing threats like fake base stations,” he said.
