The Manila Electric Co. has warned the public against the theft of electrical facilities, including power cables, following a recent attempt in Quezon City that disrupted service for nearly 8,000 customers.

“This incident underscores the grave dangers of stealing power cables and electrical facilities,” said Froilan Savet, Meralco senior vice president and head of networks. “Beyond the inconvenience caused by service interruptions, these acts pose life-threatening risks due to the high voltage of Meralco facilities. Any contact with energized facilities can lead to electric shock, severe injuries or even death.”Savet urged the public to report any suspicious activity involving company facilities to maintain safe and reliable service.

Meralco recorded 285 theft incidents involving electrical facilities and power cables in 2025. Four resulted in physical injuries and 113 caused service interruptions.

The company warned that the theft of power cables and other facilities, such as electric meters, violates Republic Act 7832, also known as the Anti-Electricity Pilferage Act. The law carries penalties of six to 12 years in prison and fines starting at P50,000.

Meralco is the country’s biggest power retailer with over 8 million customers in its franchise area.
