Filipino-Chinese business group calls for tourism reforms

Federation of Filipino Chinese Chambers of Commerce and Industry Inc. (FFCCCII) president Victor Lim has called for immediate reforms to revive the Philippine tourism industry, citing a “concerning course” compared to regional neighbors.

Lim said while the Philippines possesses unparalleled natural resources, the country is failing to match the robust recovery seen elsewhere in Southeast Asia. He described decisive reform as an urgent economic imperative to protect national well-being.

The FFCCCII noted that the Philippines recorded 5.24 million international arrivals in the first 11 months of 2025. This figure represents a 2.2-percent decline from the previous year and remains 37 percent below the 2019 pre-pandemic level.

Lim said tourism is the economy’s low-hanging fruit and a primary engine for inclusive growth that sustains micro, small and medium enterprises. He noted that the decline acts as a direct blow to the country’s economic health.

The federation identified three primary hurdles including a “hassle factor” caused by congested gateways, uncompetitive visa processes and a fragmented marketing strategy that fails to highlight the country’s culture and cuisine.

Lim proposed a national agenda centered on an “ASEAN-competitive” visa regime to match visitor-friendly policies in the region.

He also called for a revolution in connectivity to modernize primary airports and improve inter-island travel infrastructure.

The industry leader urged the government to move beyond promoting scenery and instead focus on “The Philippine Experience.”

This strategy involves connecting landscapes to living heritage and hospitality to create a more compelling global narrative.

The FFCCCII said it stands ready to work with the government to rebuild the sector into a powerhouse for shared prosperity.

Lim said that realizing the nation’s potential now demands collective will and swift action.
