Meralco, NPC to build largest microgrid

About 1,200 households and businesses on Cagbalete Island will soon gain access to reliable electricity after a state-run power firm and the Philippines’ largest electricity distributor signed a microgrid service contract.

The National Power Corp. (NPC) and Manila Electric Company (Meralco) signed the contract on Dec. 4 for a hybrid microgrid system project, enabling the provision of subsidies through the universal charge for missionary electrification.

The project is the result of collaboration with the Department of Energy (DOE) and the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC), pursuant to the Microgrid Systems Act and its implementing rules and regulations. The ERC will determine the final electricity rates in the next phase to ensure affordability for Cagbalete residents and businesses.

Meralco executive vice president and chief operating officer Ronnie Aperocho said the launch of the Cagbalete Microgrid reaffirms Meralco’s commitment to power progress with sustainable energy solutions.

“This is more than electricity – it’s about giving the light of love, joy, and hope to our fellow Filipinos in Cagbalete
