The Philippines is looking to expand its reach into India’s growing food market, following its participation in World Food India (WFI) 2025.
The country’s delegation, led by Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr., focused on strengthening agri-food cooperation and securing opportunities for Philippine agricultural and fisheries products, particularly high-value crops.
He said the WFI supports the Department of Agriculture’s (DA) national strategy to boost high-value crops and fisheries. The DA’s plan focuses on improved production efficiency, modern technologies, fiscal and non-fiscal incentives and stronger partnerships with local governments, processors and logistics providers.
A key part of the roadmap includes developing mega food hubs and strategically located wholesale markets to ensure steady supply chains, wider access to premium agri-fisheries products and greater global competitiveness.
During a courtesy call on Philippine Ambassador to India Josel Francisco Ignacio, the delegation discussed ways to connect Filipino producers, especially women-led and organic enterprises, to India’s large consumer base. Other potential areas of collaboration identified include pet food, nutraceuticals, plant-based products, alcoholic beverages and specialty foods.
The National Fisheries Research and Development Institute (NFRDI) also shared best practices for mitigating climate change impacts on food safety and fishermen’s livelihoods, reinforcing the Philippines’ dedication to a resilient and sustainable food system.
