PSA warns against double National ID registration

The Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) is cautioning the public against registering for the National ID more than once, saying the practice will cause delays in processing and may lead to investigations.

PSA Undersecretary and National Statistician and Civil Registrar General Claire Dennis Mapa said the system detects multiple registrations, which then requires further processing and investigation to ensure a unique registry.

“We reiterate that you only need to register once to the National ID,” Mapa said.

“The system detects double registrations, which can lead to additional delays as these cases will require further processing and investigation. This protocol ensures unique registrations within the system,” he said.

The PSA implements a deduplication process on both demographic and biometric information to eliminate redundancies before a permanent identification number (PSN) is generated, which is necessary for issuing a National ID. This process is crucial for the National ID’s authentication services, which are used for identity verification in various transactions.

Any format of the National ID—the card, paper, or digital versions—can be authenticated by scanning the QR code via National ID Check at the government website, according to the PSA.

The PSA said that as of Sept. 17, 2025, there have been 56,520,952 authentications recorded from National ID-integrated systems across government, social protection, private, and financial sectors, reflecting a growing number of Filipinos using their IDs.

Registered individuals who need to change or correct their information do not have to re-register. The PSA offers free updating services in selected registration centers nationwide.

Assistant secretary and deputy national statistician of the PhilSys Registry Office Rosalinda Bautista noted a May 10, 2024 public advisory that strictly prohibits double registration.

“Double registration for the National ID is prohibited,” Bautista said in Filipino.

“If you need to change information on the National ID, we have free updating services in selected registration centers,” she said.

Bautista said that detected double registrations would prolong the process and could result in an investigation.

The updating services, launched in 2024, allow for the change or correction of demographic information, including name, marital status, sex, date or place of birth, address, blood type and any clerical or typographical errors.

Registered persons only need to present their National ID and supporting documents related to the information they wish to update.

Raquel Suba, a resident of Solano, Nueva Vizcaya, who availed of the updating services, noted the process of correcting her birth year was easy. “It was fixed immediately. The process is good and the employees were approachable,” she said in Filipino.
