SPC Power unit signs battery energy storage system contracts for Panay, Bohol projects

SPC Island Power Corporation (SIPC), a wholly-owned subsidiary of the publicly listed SPC Power Corporation, has executed two major contracts for its battery energy storage system (BESS) projects in Panay and Bohol.

The agreements include a supply contract with Beijing Hyperstrong Technology Co. Ltd. for the BESS units and an engineering, design, and construction contract with China Communications Services Philippines Corporation (CCSPC).

The SIPC projects involve a 100-megawatt-hour (MWh) BESS facility in Dingle, Iloilo, and a 60 MWh BESS project in Tagbilaran City, Bohol.

James Villareal, SIPC executive vice president, called the BESS projects a “significant milestone” for the company, marking its initial venture into energy storage solutions in anticipation of its future renewable power projects.

“We are pleased to partner with Hyperstrong and China Communications Services to deliver these energy storage projects, underscoring our commitment to support the country’s RE development with sufficient energy storage capacity for grid stability,” Villareal said.

SIPC aims to begin construction this month and targets commercial operations for both BESS facilities by 2026.

Changbin Qiu, Hyperstrong senior vice president, expressed pride in supplying the BESS technology to SIPC, noting the collaboration is “tangible proof” of the company’s commitment to expanding its presence in the Philippines.

Hyperstrong is a globally recognized energy storage system integrator. According to S&P Global Commodity Insights, it ranked among the top three BESS integrators globally by capacity installed in 2023 and was the number one BESS integrator in China by cumulative installed capacity as of the end of 2024. BloombergNEF also lists Hyperstrong in its Tier 1 energy storage provider list.

CCSPC is the local subsidiary of the state-owned China Communications Services Corporation, a major publicly-traded telecommunications infrastructure services group that has been operating in the Philippines since 2019.

Energy storage systems are considered vital for ensuring the quality, reliability, and security of the electric power supply as the Philippines ramps up its use of renewable energy. The Department of Energy has set ambitious targets, aiming for a 35 percent share of renewables in the power mix by 2030 and 50 percent by 2040.
