Tetra Pak highlights PH role in Southeast Asia sustainability strategy

Tetra Pak has named the Philippines a key partner in its regional sustainability strategy, citing progress in recycling, responsible packaging, and food system support, as outlined in its 2024 Sustainability Report.

Speaking at a sustainability briefing in Manila, Tetra Pak ASEAN sustainability director Terrynz Tan said the company’s efforts in the country reflect its global agenda anchored on five pillars: food systems, climate, nature, circularity and social sustainability.

“The Philippines plays a vital role in our circular economy and recycling initiatives in Southeast Asia,” Tan said.

In the Philippines, the company has expanded partnerships with recyclers and waste collectors to support the implementation of the Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) Act.

“We’re actively supporting EPR rollouts by investing in local collection and recycling capacity,” Tan said.

Tetra Pak reported a 28 percent global recycling rate in 2024, recovering 1.3 million tons of used beverage cartons.

In 2024, the company delivered 178 billion cartons made from responsibly sourced materials. It also reported a 54 percent cut in operational greenhouse gas emissions and sourced 94 percent of its electricity from renewables.

Globally, Tetra Pak’s Dairy Hub program supported 84,000 smallholder farmers. In the Philippines, the model is helping local producers improve yields and market access.

The company also works with 25 recyclers worldwide, including several in the Philippines, to formalize jobs in the waste sector.

“No single organization can solve these challenges alone. Collaboration is essential,” Tan said, noting that despite progress, there remain gaps in recycling infrastructure, rural logistics and policy alignment.

Tetra Pak plans to expand partnerships with local governments, recyclers and communities in 2026 to further boost collection, raise public awareness and scale low-carbon packaging solutions tailored to the Philippine market.
