Quezon City retained its status as the Philippines’ largest economic contributor among 33 highly urbanized cities, while Laguna solidified its position as the biggest provincial economy in 2024, the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) reported on Thursday.
The PSA’s Provincial Product Accounts (PPA) for 2024, a milestone in its move toward full institutionalization, revealed that all 82 provinces and 33 highly urbanized cities posted economic growth from their 2023 levels.
“In 2024, all 82 provinces and 33 HUCs in the Philippines posted economic growth from their levels in 2023,” the PSA said.
Eastern Samar led the growth with a 10.2 percent increase, followed by Puerto Princesa City (9.8 percent), Batanes (9.57 percent), Dinagat Islands (9.56 percent) and Bataan (9.3 percent).
Seven provinces and three highly urbanized cities were among the top 10 fastest-growing economies, all of which grew faster than the country’s 2024 gross domestic product (GDP) growth rate of 5.7 percent.
In terms of contribution to the national GDP, Quezon City had the largest share at 6.0 percent, followed by Makati City (5.4 percent), Laguna (4.9 percent) and Manila City (4.7 percent). These four economies each recorded a GDP of more than P1 trillion, with Quezon City at P1.33 trillion, Makati City at P1.20 trillion, Laguna at P1.08 trillion and Manila City at P1.04 trillion.
The top 10 largest economies included four highly urbanized cities from the National Capital Region (NCR), three provinces from Region IV-A (CALABARZON), and two provinces from Region III (Central Luzon).
Cavite contributed P822 billion; Batangas, P688 billion; Bulacan, P676 billion; Taguig City, P656 billion; Pampanga, P595 billion; and Davao City, P575 billion.
Davao City remained the only economy outside Luzon to be in the top 10.
