Agila shipyard in Subic aims to create 10,000 jobs

Industrial hub Agila Subic Compass Inc. expects to create 10,000 jobs by 2027, with total investments expected to exceed $1 billion in the revitalization of the former Hanjin Heavy Industries shipyard in Zambales province.

The 310-hectare facility, idle since Hanjin’s bankruptcy in 2019, employs about 4,000 workers through its tenant companies and expects to add thousands more in the next two years.

Agila Subic serves as a strategic Asia-Pacific center for shipbuilding, subsea infrastructure and logistics, attracting major locators.

Agila general manager Mark Millan said the transformation is delivering opportunities for engineers, skilled workers, contractors, and service providers, while boosting the local supply chain.

“When we started operations in 2022, we committed to transforming the facility into an economically viable site that would attract world-class locators and create thousands of direct and indirect jobs for Subic Bay and nearby communities. We are pleased to see that we are on track after only three years,” he said.

The project is backed by US-based Cerberus Capital Management, which acquired the shipyard in 2022.

The facility is rapidly emerging as a strategic hub for shipbuilding, subsea infrastructure, and logistics in the Asia-Pacific, while also spurring a surge in new restaurants, shops, and small businesses in surrounding communities.

It hosts four major tenants including the Philippine Navy, Subcom, HD Hyundai Heavy Industries Philippines and V2X.
