Eastern Communications has tapped First Gen Corp. to increase its renewable energy utilization to 10 percent from 2 percent, the company said Wednesday.
Under the agreement, First Gen will supply geothermal energy to power the telco’s Makati headquarters and primary technical operations centers. The shift is intended to support digital infrastructure with resilient power while reducing carbon emissions.
The geothermal energy is sourced from facilities in Leyte, utilizing indigenous resources to secure the network facilities that maintain enterprise connectivity.
“This partnership represents a clear step forward in how we power our operations,” Eastern Communications co-coordinator Aileen Regio said.
“By integrating geothermal energy into key facilities, we are reinforcing the resilience of our core infrastructure. Sustainability, for us, is directly linked to service continuity and long-term performance,” said Regio.
The transition was made possible through the government’s Retail Competition Open Access program, which allows large electricity consumers to contract directly with power suppliers.
The company said this enables deliberate energy choices that align with long-term sustainability and facility efficiency.
“Increasing our renewable utilization is a concrete milestone,” Eastern Communications co-coordinator Jaeson Evangelista said.
“Together with the 222 kW solar capacity already supporting our Makati HQ and TOCs, our adoption of renewable geothermal energy strengthens our ability to operate efficiently while aligning with national climate priorities and the broader shift toward a circular economy,” said Evangelista.
The move is part of a broader modernization initiative that includes intelligent automation, energy-efficient systems and disaster resilience projects.
The investments support the company’s 2026 strategic direction, “Dare To Soar,” which focuses on innovation and responsible growth.
