The Muntinlupa City government has established a dedicated support group for families raising children with disabilities. Members of this community gather every month in a safe space to share their experiences, gain insights, and fine encouragement from each other.
For Jhen, a mother of a child with special needs, the support group has been a lifeline. “We have found a new family to assist us with our children,” she said in Tagalog, expressing gratitude. “The sharing sessions with fellow parents are a source of inspiration and practical ideas for our children.”
Dan, another parent, echoed her sentiments. He said it gave him and his wife tremendous relief to have a people around, who are willing to listen as they open up about the challenges in their family. He found solace in knowing they’re not alone.
The support group is an extension of Project AGAP (Agarang Gabay at Alalay na Pambata), a pioneering initiative of Mayor Ruffy Biazon aimed at the early detection and intervention of developmental delays in children.
Through Project AGAP, children with special needs receive free assessments and therapy sessions conducted by developmental-behavioral pediatricians, ensuring timely support and care.
The establishment of the support group underscores Muntinlupa City’s commitment to fostering an inclusive community that embraces and supports all its members, regardless of their abilities.
“This initiative highlights our unwavering dedication to the well-being of every family in Muntinlupa,” Biazon stated. “We believe that every child deserves the opportunity to thrive, and we are committed to providing the resources and support they need to reach their full potential.”
The support group has already made a profound impact on the lives of participating parents, offering a much-needed sense of community and empowerment. “This program has given us hope and strength to continue advocating for our children,” Jhen said.
