The Philippine national modern pentathlon team, which is starting to prove its worth in the Southeast Asian region and at the world stage, will continue preparing for future international meets in the next two years.
Philippine Modern Pentathlon Association president Richard Gomez said this after 16-year-old Joseph Godbout led the list of Filipino athletes, who excelled at the world stage.
Godbout, who was recently feted in the 3rd Siklab Youth Sports Awards, ruled the UIPM 2023 Biathle/Triathle World Championships in Nusa Dua, Bali, Indonesia last Nov. 5.
On August 2, Godbout earned a silver medal in the UIPM 2023 Laser Run World Championships, Bath, Great Britain.
“We’re happy the we produced an individual world champion, and a team champion in Southeast Asia,” said Gomez.
The fortunes of the national team shone bright early this year when a contingent led by Samuel German and Juliana Shane Sevilla bagged seven gold medals in the UIPM 2023 Southeast Asia Championships, which was held last May in Pattaya, Chon Buri, Thailand.
German and Sevilla won two gold medals in their respective categories in the Laser Run before they teamed up for another gold for the Philippines.
Godbout made his presence felt when he completed the medal haul for the country as he ruled the Triathle Final Men.
“We will just continue preparing them for the next SEA championships. Marami kaming athletes na puwedeng mag-champion,” added Gomez.
During SEA meets last May, German and Sevilla ruled the men’s and women’s Laser Run of the Southeast Asian Nations Category, before they came up with two more gold medals in the same event in the Asian Nation Category.
