Smart Communications, Inc. answered the plea of Pasig Catholic College for connectivity assistance for students and teachers who have been severely impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.

True to the company’s core value of “malasakit”, Smart provided 200 preloaded Smart Bro Pocket WiFi units and complemented these with 200 Smart Call and Text prepaid cards in P300 denomination.

“The coronavirus has made learning difficult for students and teachers alike. But through Smart's fastest network and connectivity tools, we can help ensure that no learner is left behind, even in these challenging times," said Melvin Consunji Nubla, VP and Head of Go To Market and Subscriber Management.

Like all schools in the country, Pasig Catholic College adopted measures to abide by existing health protocols. Still, acting president Bp. Mylo Hubert C. Vergara, D.D. shared that the institution saw a significant drop in enrolment with some students transferring to public schools because of financial constraints. The shift to online classes weighed heavily on impoverished students, many of whom took odd jobs like doing their neighbors’ laundry or babysitting just to buy data load for online classes.

“In the case of our students who have limited resources, they struggled in attending to the needs of online learning.  Some of them do not have the necessary device and a stable connectivity,” narrated Bishop Vergara.

The school’s teaching personnel also struggled to migrate courses to digital platforms. Unfortunately, some members of the faculty don’t have the capacity to provide themselves with connectivity tools. While most of the devices are allotted for college students, a few Smart Bro Pocket WiFi units will also be given to select teachers in basic education. This will supplement Pasig Catholic College’s existing initiatives such as allowing teachers to use the school’s computer laboratories for online classes and lending them desktop computers so they may conduct online classes at home.

“Smart’s assistance will enable the recipients to cope with the demands of e-learning and online transactions being adopted by the school. We’re also thankful that PLDT-Smart Foundation has provided load cards to further help students with online classes. Smart serves as the bridge that allows the students and teachers to transfer to the next phase of the process of teaching and learning.,” added Bishop Vergara.

Pasig Catholic College was founded by the missionaries of the Congregation of the Immaculate Heart of Mary (CICM) more than a century ago. The institution is committed to evangelize the youth through Catholic education that promotes a culture of excellence and social transformation.

PLDT and Smart provide access to inclusive quality education in basic to tertiary levels, through Information and Communications Technology (ICT), content, pedagogy, and capacity building to ensure that there is #NoLearnerLeftBehind. It is also a staunch advocate of ensuring cyber safety and creating safe spaces online.

PLDT and Smart enable learning communities through technology as part of its commitment to help the nation achieve the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) #4: Quality Education.
