COMPUTEX 2019: Intelligent edge ecosystems fuels business transformation

Taipei, Taiwan — IoT solutions can definitely enable innovation and opportunity on the intelligent edge as COMPUTEX 2019 in Taipei on Wednesday, ushered in key industry player Microsoft in a keynote presentation fruitful for Original Design Manufacturers, and Original Equipment Manufacturers.

Microsoft corporate vice president of OS Platforms Roanne Sones, and vice president of IoT Sales Rodney Clark, joined corporate vice president of consumer and device sales Nick Parker in a keynote address highlighting technologies and services that OEM/ODM partners can use to deliver innovative PC experiences and build advanced connected devices and IoT solutions.

In addition, they provided perspective as to how intelligent edge ecosystem partners can fuel business transformation by working together to build edge-to-cloud IoT solutions.

Microsoft depends on its supply chain partners and developers to “help us pool and harness the capabilities of the ecosystem together,” Clark said.

“So, if you’re a small device manufacturer, and you don’t have a relationship with a large retailer, but you have a solution that was a great fit from an IoT perspective, in this world of aggregation, you will be partnering with a larger set of companies that provide the capabilities that allow us to present your solution, along with the solutions of others, to the customer as one, complete, end-to-end IoT solution,” Clark said.

Clark highlighted the outcomes of Microsoft’s $5 billion investment in IoT innovation over the past year, including the Taiwan Innovation Lab. Clark said that 50% of Azure IoT and Edge certified devices have been developed by Taiwanese suppliers.

The updated vision of the personal computing ecosystem requires an operating system that enables the basic experiences customers expect, such as seamless updates, default security that protects users and the OS from malicious attacks, connectivity anywhere with 5G, LTE and Wi-Fi and performance that is consistent and reliable over time, Microsoft said.

Microsoft also announced updates to its YourPhone app, allowing increased functionality for Android phone users, such as seamless photo sharing, screen-mirroring and keyboard passthrough capabilities, to ease use of phone apps via your computer.

The breadth of Microsoft’s vision was demonstrated when, alongside an app to ease phone-computer contact, the tech giant revealed increased access to its powerhouse Azure IoT edge open source runtime, and a plan to simplify the creation of IoT devices with its new IoT Plug and Play Bridge for Windows.

Recalling the industry-changing impact of its original plug and play specification on PC peripherals, Microsoft announced that with its new technologies, manufacturers and vendors will experience the easiest way to demonstrate value of linking devices to the intelligent cloud.

AI-powered innovations, such as cross-language PowerPoint subtitling and cloud-powered expanded Asian handwritten character recognition accompanied news about the first dual-protocol pen peripherals available.

Demonstrating its wide influence in the tech sector, Microsoft exhorted its supply chain to maintain its past success, while reaching for new heights of achievement across design, implementation and innovation.
