Satisfying, immersive gaming experience with realme 14 5G

realme has always been known for its competitive, high-quality, and innovative smartphones with cutting-edge technology at affordable prices–popular for their trendsetting designs and features.

With a catchprase “Make it real”, it is marketed for young, tech-savvy users, who value durability and reliability.

On April 29 at Whitespace in Makati, realme launched its 14 Series (realme 14 5G and realme 14T 5G), marketed as gaming-focused smartphones, particularly within the mid-range category (Ours is the realme 14 5G Mecha Silver version).

Not a gamer myself, so I asked my nephew Yohann Flores, to test our unit to the limit.

Take it away, Yohann.

The Snapdragon 6 Gen 4 handles games nicely as frame rates stay consistently high, with minimal lag, allowing you to focus entirely on your strategy and reflexes.

The first thing you notice is the sleek, almost aggressive design – and with its geometric lines, it gives out a futuristic vibe. It’s comfortable to hold for extended periods, and the lightweight build prevents your wrists from getting too tired during those long sessions.

You fire up your go-to game, Mobile Legends: Bang Bang (the realme 14, by the way, is the official phone for the realme Mobile Legends Cup Season 9). The 120Hz AMOLED display is impressive. Everything feels smooth – from navigating the menus to the fast-paced action in the arena. The colors are vibrant, and the details pop, making the battlefield engaging.

The 1500Hz touch sampling rate is a game-changer. With taps and swipes registering instantly, dodging skill shots and executing combos feel precise and responsive, giving you a noticeable advantage over players on less responsive devices. You crank the graphics to the highest settings, and the Snapdragon 6 Gen 4 handles it nicely as frame rates stay consistently high, with minimal lag, allowing you to focus entirely on your strategy and reflexes.

As the match goes on, you feel the phone getting a little warm, but the realme 14’s vapor chamber cooling system does its job. It never gets disturbingly hot, and you don’t notice any significant performance throttling, which is crucial during clutch moments.

When you secure a victory, the Victory Halo light around the camera module pulses – a cool, subtle way to celebrate your win. It’s a fun little touch that adds to the gaming aesthetic.

After handling Mobile Legends: Bang Bang with ease, you switch to a more demanding one like Genshin Impact. You manage to play at high settings, and while it’s mostly smooth, you might notice occasional minor stutters during particularly chaotic scenes.

The solution? Just lower the graphics to medium for a consistently smooth experience. The GT Boost mode is interesting; toggling it on seems to push the performance a bit further.

The stereo speakers provide decent audio, allowing you to hear the in-game sounds clearly, which helps with spatial awareness. While the bass isn’t the most impactful, and the sound can get a bit tinny at the maximum 300% volume, it’s generally good enough for a good experience, especially when you don’t have headphones handy. But thankfully, the realme PR kit included a TechLife Headphones G1 so the gaming is up a notch.

I tested other games such as Garena and Honor of Kings and the realme 14 5G still packed a wallop.

Battery is massive at 6000mAh, keeping you gaming for hours without needing to scramble for a charger. Even with a few hours of intense gaming, you still have plenty of juice left for other tasks throughout the day. And when you finally do need to charge, the 45W SuperVOOC gets you back in the game quickly. The Bypass Charging feature is also a thoughtful addition – when you’re plugged in and gaming, it minimizes heat generation, which is great for battery health and comfort.

However, you might notice the absence of an ultrawide or telephoto lens on the camera. While this doesn’t directly impact gaming, if you frequently switch between gaming and photography, you might find the camera system a bit limited in versatility.

Overall, your first-hand experience gaming on the realme 14 is overwhelmingly positive. It delivers smooth performance in most popular titles, has a responsive display, excellent battery life, and an effective cooling system – all crucial elements for a satisfying mobile gaming experience, especially in the mid-range category. The dedicated gaming features and the overall design clearly cater to gamers, making it a strong contender for your go-to gaming phone.

(Available in bold finishes: Mecha Silver, Storm Titanium, and Warrior Pink, the realme 14 5G is priced at P17,999 SRP).
