THE National Telecommunications Commission strongly reiterated its call to its own regional directors and the country’s leading telcos to ramp up their efforts in the fight against fake job text and similar scams.

In a memo sent by the NTC, the commission’s regional directors and officers-in-charge were once again directed to “appear before local radio and television stations within your respective jurisdictions to warn the public against the continuing text scams from July 5 to July 11, 2022 and further increase your respective local public information campaigns to educate the public of the new derivatives of these scams.”

“The persistence of fake job text and similar scams has still remained unabated over the month of June across telecommunications networks in the country, in various new forms, targeting the general public,” wrote NTC commissioner Gamaliel A. Cordoba.

At the same time, the NTC renewed its request to the DITO Telecommunity, Globe Telecoms and Smart Communications to text blast to their subscribers from July 5 to July 11, 2022 the following message: “BABALA HUWAG PONG MANIWALA SA TEXT NA NAG-AALOK NG TRABAHO NA MAY PANGAKO NA MALAKING SWELDO. ITO PO AY ISANG SCAM.”

The telcos were also “directed to continue the process of blocking SIM cards being utilized to perpetrate these fraudulent activities and further increase your respective public information campaigns to educate the public of the new derivatives of these scams.”

This is the third time in a month that the NTC, alarmed at the upsurge of spam text messages, has called out its regional directors, OICs and telcos, who were also ordered to submit a written report of compliance to the Office of the Commissioner on or before July 15, 2022.

The NTC reminds the public and phone users to refuse providing personal information to strangers, decline survey questions from unknown senders and ignore dubious websites.
