More handwashing facilities are built under the WASH in Pandemic program, which aims to deliver immediate water access, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) interventions in the “new normal”—this time in Pasig City.

Manila Water Foundation (MWF) and its partners turned over four new handwashing facilities to the City Government of Pasig on November 25.

In partnership with P&G and Safeguard Philippines, three new handwashing facilities were installed at high foot-traffic areas that provide essential services, namely the Rescue Emergency Disaster (RED) Training Center, Pasig City Mega Market, and Manggahan Super Health Center.

This is aligned with Safeguard’s Safe Philippines campaign, which aims to encourage Filipinos to adopt proper hand hygiene habits, including in essential public spaces.

Meanwhile, another facility was built at the Pasig City Jail granted by One Young World, a global nonprofit that convenes young leaders across the world to accelerate social impact.

The project in Pasig City is supported by the Department of Health (DOH), City Government of Pasig, and Manila Water through its Pasig Business Area.

The inauguration ceremony was graced by Mayor Vico Sotto of Pasig City, Dr. Beverly Ho, Director of the DOH Health Promotion and Communication Service, and representatives from Manila Water Foundation and Manila Water – Pasig Business Area.

"Hindi lang ito tungkol sa handwashing facility—tungkol din ito sa pagpapaalala sa mga mamamayan ng Pasig na kailangan lagi nating obserbahan ang mga health protocol kagaya ng paghuhugas ng mga kamay (This isn’t about the handwashing facility itself—this is also a reminder to the citizens of Pasig that we always need to observe health protocols such as proper handwashing)," said Mayor Sotto.

During the inauguration ceremony on November 25, MWF also turned over 1,000 gallons of drinking water to the City Government of Pasig, 300 pieces of hygiene kits, and deployed 300 food packs donated by offshore business process outsourcing and contact center

company Teleperformance for the benefit of the families affected by Typhoon Ulysses. The donations were made possible through the League of Corporate Foundation (LCF) Committee on Disaster Resilience’s call for in-kind donations.

DOH also provided 200 pieces of Bida Solusyon hygiene kits, which contain reusable face masks, liquid soaps, and feminine hygiene products, among others.

WASH in Pandemic

Upholding health and safety above all, the handwashing facilities under the WASH in Pandemic program utilizes a “hybrid” design. This means that the users may turn on the faucets in two ways: via a lever that can be used by a hand or an elbow, or by using a foot pedal. There is a one-meter distance between faucets, to observe physical distancing. To make it more accessible for everyone, there is a lowered sink which can be easily used by children and persons with disabilities (PWDs). Each facility is built with three faucets with soap containers and installed with signages about COVID-19 precautionary measures, proper handwashing, and the responsible use of water.

As of writing, DOH cites a total of 11,156 COVID-19 cases in Pasig City. This project aims to support the City's fight against the disease by promoting handwashing as the first line of defense against the spread of viruses.
