Cordon, Isabela, Philippines – 11 March 2025 – MGEN Renewable Energy Inc. (MGreen), the renewable energy arm of Meralco PowerGen Corporation (MGEN), has officially switched on its 52.8-megawatt (MWac) MGreen Cordon Solar power plant in Cordon, Isabela. It is one of the biggest operational solar plants in the whole of Region 2 under the second Green Energy Auction (GEA II) program of the Department of Energy (DOE). This milestone underscores MGEN’s commitment to expanding its clean energy portfolio and contributing to the country’s transition to renewable energy.
MGreen Cordon Solar is MGreen’s second GEA II project completed ahead of schedule, further demonstrating its efficiency and expertise in executing renewable energy projects. Finished four months ahead of schedule, this new solar power plant will supply clean and reliable electricity to over 53,000 households, supporting the DOE’s goal of increasing the share of renewable energy in the power mix to 35% by 2030 and 50% by 2040.
“We’re proud to share this milestone with you—the people of Cordon—as we switch on our solar power plant that’s completed four months ahead of schedule. We want to show that economic progress, and environmental responsibility can go hand in hand,” said Dennis B. Jordan, President and CEO of MGreen. Local government leaders also expressed their enthusiasm with Mayor Lynn Zuniega of the Municipality of Cordon saying, “Today, after years of planning, perseverance, and collaboration, our vision has finally become a reality. This solar power plant stands as a testament to what we can achieve when we work together with a shared commitment to progress and sustainability.”

National government representatives were also present during the event and highlighted the project’s impact. DOE Assistant Secretary Mario Marasigan emphasized the multiple benefits of the project, stating, “There are several benefits from this project, including the local job opportunities created, the boosting of local businesses, the socio-economic developments for Barangay Capirpiriwan, and the Energy Regulation No. 1-94 benefit which gives host communities a share from the profits of power plants.” Board Member of the Province of Isabela Hon. Victor Dy added, “This solar power plant is more than just an infrastructure; it’s a statement of commitment to clean energy and a sustainable future for generations to come.”
MGreen Cordon Solar is expected to displace over 50,400 metric tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) which is equivalent to over 11,700 gasoline-powered cars off the road annually using the Greenhouse Gas Equivalencies Calculator. This project significantly contributes to MGreen’s role in supporting the country’s sustainability and decarbonization efforts.
Atty. Primabelle S. Gobantes, Supervising Energy Regulation Officer of the Energy Regulatory Commission echoed this, saying, “The ERC acknowledges the vital role of projects like this in helping the government’s efforts to reach the renewable energy targets on our National Renewable Energy Plan. Your efforts in making this possible show that we are advancing toward a renewable energy-secured future.”

Beyond its renewable energy contribution, the project has also brought over 800 jobs during its construction. To support the community development of Brgy. Capirpiriwan, MGreen donated 20 solar streetlights, planted 500 seedlings, and organized a medical mission benefiting 170 patients in partnership with the LGU. MGreen also provided financial support during the Brgy. Capirpiriwan Fiesta, the 11th Manalon Festival and 85th Araw ng Cordon, and sponsored the major prize for the 2025 Isabela Provincial Athletic Association (IsPAA) Meet. Through these initiatives, MGreen continues to make a meaningful impact on the communities it serves.
With the successful completion of MGreen Cordon Solar, it continues to drive the expansion of the Philippines’ renewable energy capacity. MGreen is set to add 85.2 MWac of solar capacity in 2025, including the recently inaugurated solar power plant in Bongabon, Nueva Ecija, and the upcoming expansion of an existing solar facility in Baras, Rizal.
This is MGEN’s 7th solar power plant in the Philippines after MGreen BulacanSol, Nueva Solar, MGreen Baras Solar, MGreen Bongabon Solar, MGreen SP Calatagan, and MGreen SP Tarlac.
