Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Philippines small businesses and conglomerates are forced to do everything online–even saving documents. Should business owners invest in the IT department?

ManageEngine, an enterprise IT management division of Zoho Corporation discussed the importance of having a good relationship between IT department and non-IT staff in their press conference briefing in Manila Peninsula Hotel, last November 24, 2022.

With the help of Arun Kumar, Regional Director for APAC, shared his presentation about their study entitled “IT at Work: 2022 and Beyond” which focuses on IT decision-makers (ITDMs).

Vanson Bourne conducted the study, which included 150 ITDMs from various organizations across the Philippines. Respondents were polled on issues such as IT’s role, artificial intelligence, sustainability, and cybersecurity.

The results of the study revealed that 84% of the participants believed that the IT department has become more responsible for business innovation than previously.

Moreover, 77% of the decision-makers perceived that the IT department could stimulate better innovation if it occupied a more assertive leadership position. Based on the results, the key point is to create a future-proof workforce capable of transforming enterprises into competitive forces in the age of digital change.

Since the pandemic, the country is left with no option but to deal with the present situation and gradually shift everything online. With inadequate data protection measures and a tech-savvy Filipino community, the Philippines is highly at risk of cyber-attacks and incidents.

According to Kumar, the IT department plays a vital role in building value-added initiatives.

“IT teams need to work together with non-IT departments by equipping non-IT staff with the necessary skills and knowledge to embark on a digital innovation journey. With this collaboration and shared knowledge, IT and non-IT employees can form a strong and resilient barrier that will keep critical resources secure from cyberattacks while leading tech advancement,” he added.

However, as IT teams are constantly facilitating digital innovation, the results of the survey showed that 59% of ITDMs in the Philippines observed insufficient support for the past two years.

Investing and utilizing the current technology is a must-have, especially for businesses and other organizations for the safety and future of their company. Aside from that, there are various benefits you can get such as improving the profitability of the business, keeping updated with the latest developments, and boosting the competitiveness of the company.

Keeping up with technology can be challenging for certain employees, which is why intensive training is essential, especially for companies that intend to invest in technology.

“IT departments play a crucial role in developing value-added strategies and providing deep insights into organizations’ digitization potential,” Kumar said.

According to their study, 93% of the decision-makers believe that collaboration between IT teams and other departments has increased in the last two years.

Artificial intelligence and machine learning are becoming increasingly needed in businesses, but necessary training and practice are still needed. More than 95% of business decision-makers shared that their employees face some barriers when it comes to taking full advantage of technologies, 60% said that employees still need to undergo some training, and 49% said that decentralization of technology is a challenge.

Decentralization of technology is already in the process, but there is still some room for improvement. If these challenges are conquered, businesses can fully maximize their technology with the help of their IT departments and non-IT teams.
