A treasure trove of rare European decorative art and design pieces will be auctioned at Casa de Memoria on July 7.

Portraits of Spanish Soldiers

Coming from a successful anniversary auction, the international auction house will present a new collection of items merging beauty and function from the ‘50s to ‘70s in its 12th bidding allowing collectors to imbibe “The Casa Living.”

“We wanted to show that beautiful works of art make for great decorations but can also have practical uses as well,” said Camille Lhuillier, Casa de Memoria Marketing Manager.

The selection includes furniture, woodworks, porcelain and ceramics, paintings, metalworks, glass and crystals, silver pieces, and ivory figures.

One of the items in the collection is an Italian two-seater armchair featuring Fiat “Nuova” 500 in “medium red Fiat 115” coating. This innovatively transformed car part of a Fiat 500 model was manufactured and part of Routehouse collection. Its compartment is integrated with a limited edition Philips Classic micro sound system OTT2000 that brings nostalgia for the iconic 1965 Philips AG4131 record player.

Marked with Aguia 833 assay, a Portuguese silver tea and coffee set is also featured in the auction. It is a neoclassical frieze decorated with floral bands yet its bold vessels give an early 20th-century modernist appeal.

Also part of the auction is a portrait of Spanish soldiers signed by “Bello” dated ’94 (1894). Sized 65.5 by 80 centimeters, it is painted in warm tones and brisk strokes that casts an animating force onto the subjects.

Stamped with Paris bronze guarantee “J.B. Déposée” and numbered A7255, a Ballet Russe bronze sculpture on marble base is also part of the collection. The sculpture, based on the style of D.H. Chiparus, features a Russian dancer in a delightful flight with arms spread, slightly-bent knees, and tipped toes.

With mostly European items, Lhuillier said this auction aims to remind people of the classic and antiquated lifestyle.

“I find that the market is very saturated with local Filipino art and that’s a fantastic thing but we did find that this is a niche should people would be interested,” Lhuiller told Manila Standard in an interview.

Lhuiller also said Casa de Memoria wants to “educate people on what European and international art is” by reaching out through social media.

The variety of antiques are consigned pieces from local and foreign collectors, said Gregorio Caliguia III, Casa de Memoria research specialist.

“These pieces have different stories on their own in terms of ownership and also the history of their times when they’re made,” Caliguia said.

Established collectors are expected to come in the auction yet Caliguia noted the rising attendance of youngsters in their previous biddings.

“We try to lower the prices of the pieces so we have a wider market and the items would become accessible to them,” he added.

A charity will benefit from the proceeds of the auction that will be held at Casa de Memoria’s showroom along Jupiter Street in Makati City.
