GSIS manager outperforms market

State-run pension fund Government Service Insurance System has nice things to say about PhilEquity Management Inc., one of its external fund managers.  In fact, PhilEquity Management emerged as the best external fund manager of GSIS in 2014, according to GSIS president and general manager Robert Vergara.

Vergara said PhilEquity “outperformed the market by 1,000 basis points, if I remember correctly.”

PhilEquity is the investment manager and principal distributor of Philequity Fund Inc., which is said to be the Philippines’ best performing equity mutual fund.

PhilEquity is among the eight external fund managers of the GSIS.  External fund managers hold about P34 billion of the equity portfolio of the pension fund.

The fund managers made an average return of about 23 percent in 2014, slight higher than the Philippine Stock Exchange index’s 22.7-percent gain.

The GSIS fund managers also include the trust departments of the Rizal Commercial Banking Corp, BDO Unibank Inc., Bank of the Philippine Islands, Metrobank, ATR Kim Eng, First Metro Investment Corp., PhilEquity and Philam Life Asset Management Inc.
