Overwhelming demand for papal coins

Overwhelming public demand has encouraged officials of the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas to authorize the production of more papal coins in commemoration of the state and pastoral visit of Pope Francis in the Philippines in January this year.

The increase in production of the papal coins had to be approved by the Vatican under an amended licensing agreement. “The additional Pope Francis commemorative coins will be available in the next few months as materials needed for the minting and packaging will go through public bidding,” Bangko Sentral said.

To avoid oversubscription beyond the amended agreement with the Vatican in view of the sustained demand, the BSP will close the period of reservation for the papal coins on March 13, 2015, which is earlier than the original deadline of June 30, 2015.

“Coin orders placed up to March 6 will be fully served as supply becomes available. Meanwhile, those received thereafter up to March 13 will be served on a pro-rata basis based on the actual remaining inventory,” Bangko Sentral said.

For the coin pickup, BSP will issue a confirmation e-mail on the specific date and place. This e-mail must be presented as proof of order when claiming the papal coins.
