Creamline, BaliPure aim for PVL lead

CREAMLINE and BaliPure tangle today in an early clash of the fancied teams while Pocari Sweat seeks a share of the lead against Perlas-BanKo in the Premier Volleyball League Open Conference at the Filoil Flying V Center in San Juan.

The Cool Smashers hurdled the Akari-Adamson side in four, 25-17, 18-25, 25-15, 25-22, in last Saturday’s opener but Alyssa Valdez and company will need to toughen up, particularly in service receives, when they face the Water Defenders in the featured 6:30 p.m. encounter.

BaliPure actually had a tougher opening game stint in the mid-season conference of the league organized by Sports Vision, needing to fight back from 1-2 down before dominating the fifth to foil the Power Smashers, 25-15, 22-25, 20-25, 25-19, 15-6, late Sunday.

But the Water Defenders are expected to have settled down as they try to re-assert their mastery over the Cool Smashers who they dominated in the recent Reinforced Conference.

The match will also feature the face-off of two of the league’s power-hitters—Grethcel Soltones and Valdez—with each team’s bench out to provide added firepower and spunk in pursuit of a second straight victory in the single round robin elims of the tournament backed by Mikasa and Asics.

Soltones, a three-time NCAA MVP, fired 22 hits and drew solid backup from Risa Sato (18), Jerrili Malabanan (16) and Aiko Urdas (15) as they rallied past the Power Smashers.

Valdez and veteran Rosemarie Vargas, on the other hand, each hammered in 18 hits and teamed up with Pau Soriano and ace setter Jia Morado to turn back the tough-fighting Lady Falcons.

Pocari, meanwhile, shook off a poor first set stint and disposed of University of the Philippines, 21-25, 25-20, 25-18, 25-21, late Sunday with the Lady Warriors hoping to improve as they square off with the Perlas-Banko Spikers at 4 p.m.

Perlas stumbled to a four-set setback to Air Force last Saturday but is raring to bounce back against a team seeking a fourth straight championship in the league.

Meanwhile, Sta. Elena and Air Force also dispute the lead in the men’s side as they collide at 1 p.m. while newcomer Megabuilders eyes a share of the lead against Café Lupe in the 10 a.m. opener.
