The Unforgettable ONE Championship Debut Of Jomary Torres

There are only a few ONE Championship debuts that can match Jomary “The Zamboanginian Fighter” Torres’ spectacular entry into The Home Of Martial Arts at ONE: KINGS AND CONQUERORS back in 2017.

Not knowing what to expect the moment she got on a plane to fly to Macau and compete in the famous Cotai Arena where her idol Manny Pacquiao once competed, it was a whirlwind of emotion for the Catalan Fighting System athlete.

It did not help that on the other end of the Circle stood Thai rising star Rika “Tiny Doll” Ishige, who could’ve been mistaken as a fashion model with the way she appeared at the pre-match press conference.

“I was really nervous at that time. It was my first time to fight outside the country and to fight in front of thousands of fans,” Torres said.

“Of course, all the attention was with Rika at that time, she was really a head turner and famous.”

After letting Ishige take the spotlight outside the Circle, Torres made sure to steal it on the inside.

From the opening bell, “The Zamboanginian Fighter” brought the action to her Thai counterpart and Ishige did not know what hit her.

Torres countered masterfully, hitting Ishige from all angles and dominating whichever way the match went.

The finish came in the second round when she knocked Ishige down, took her back, and secured a rear-naked choke for a submission win.

“Truth be told, I was nervous up until I was walking to the cage, but at the end of the day, I just thought about how big this opportunity was. I kept thinking about my family and how I won’t waste this opportunity for them,” she said.

It seems like a long time ago since Torres made that amazing debut, and she could not be any farther from that situation as she has not won a match since 2018.

Still, each time she looks back on the bout, it gives her a sense of confidence that she can bring back that old fire.

“I know I’ve been in a slump as of late, but each time I reminisce about that match, it gives me this sense of belief that I can get back to form,” Torres said.

“Now I am training really hard so I’ll be ready when I return.”
