It has been almost five months since Robin “The Ilonggo” Catalan stepped foot in the ONE Championship Circle, but he has never lost sight of his long-term goals in the sport.
With five wins under his belt since joining The Home Of Martial Arts in March 2016, Catalan is poised to make a big splash this year, especially after ending his 2019 with an explosive knockout win over Gustavo “El Gladiador” Balart of Cuba at ONE: MASTERS OF FATE in Manila last November.
Catalan would like to return to action as soon as possible, but the COVID-19 pandemic is delaying his reappearance.
“What’s happening today is sad, not only in this country, but in the whole world, because of the coronavirus. But I believe this is just one test that we have to hurdle, a test which will only make us stronger and united,” Catalan said.
“Now there’s a lockdown, but training still continues in the gym. For me, it’s the perfect opportunity to hone my skills and be ready when another opportunity comes knocking.”
On top of keeping himself physically and mentally fit, the 29-year-old Iloilo City native is also assisting his brother, Rene “The Challenger” Catalan, by hosting different team building exercises.
The objective of the team building exercises is to improve their relationship so they can fulfill their goals, not individually, but together.
“The lockdown is a good opportunity for us to know each other more and guide the younger ones in the gym. This is where we set the foundation of the group. We all have dreams, and we will try to reach them together,” Catalan said.
“I help out in the activities of the team, but of course there’s a strict implementation of social distancing so we can avoid the virus.”
Though situated in a tough position, Catalan is staying positive as he does what he can to avoid the virus and complete his daily goals.
“As a citizen, it’s my responsibility to follow the government and avoid being part of the problem,” Catalan said.
“At the same time, I am also able to take care of myself, stay busy and still hone my skills.”
