Ochoa rules Dan Fernando online chess tournament

Kyle Emmanuel Ochoa ruled the Governor Daniel R. Fernando Online Swiss Chess Tournament (Individual event) Saturday, afternoon, November 28, 2020 at the lichess.org.

Handling the black pieces, the seventh seed Ochoa defeated top seed International Master Angelo Young in 58 moves of a King’s Indian defense to notch 6.5 points out of the possible seven and bag the title.

“Masaya ako sa pagkapanalo kong ito,” said Ochoa, the pride of Malolos City, who escaped a losing position against Young, who is from Marilao, in their rook and pawn endgame.

Third seed Karl Victor Ochoa, elder brother of Kyle Emmanuel, meantime split the point with National Master Michael Gotel after 29 moves of French defense to score 6 points and take home the runner-up prize.

Ninth seed Joshua Heshed Crismo, who crushed 20th seed Vince Duane Pascual, and 23th seed Jhune Angelo Dultra, halved the point with sixth seed Victor “Bong” Anas. Crismo tallied 5.5 points alongside Gotel to share the third, fourth and fifth place. Gotel was awarded the third place because of higher tie-break points.

The tournament was organized by the Bulacan Sports Division headed by OIC, Sports Division Tournament director Benjamin B. Santos Jr. and Deputy Tournament director Normel Benigno R. De Jesus.

It was sponsored jointly by Gov. Daniel R. Fernando, Vice Gov.Wilhelmino “Willy” Manucdoc Sy-Alvarado and Provincial Youth, Sports and Public Employment Service Office Department Head Atty. Kenneth Z. Ocampo-Lantin.

IM Young, Andrew Dalina, Leo Aldrin Caraig, Art Gian Juan, Roxanne Atayde, Emmanuel Dave Santos and Anas, who each had 5 points, shared sixth to 12th places.

Chief Arbiter is FNA Byron G. Villar assisted by Deputy Chief Arbiter FNA Almario Marlon Q. Bernardino Jr. in the weekend tournament applying the 15 minutes + 2 seconds increment time control format.

Meanwhile, the Philippine Arbiters Chess Confederation (PACC, Inc.) is pleased to announce the membership extension till November 30 and the 1st PACC National Arbiters Virtual Convention (NAVCon ) this coming December 19, 2020. NAVCon will be organized by PACC, the sole National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP) – affiliated and recognized Arbiters’ Association in our country.

This NAVCon will be having a full-packed day of activities intended to uplift the caliber of Filipino Licensed Chess Arbiters. 

Guest Speakers and Lecturers include prominent names in Philippine Chess, such as Deputy Speaker Prospero Pichay Jr., NCFP Chairman/President, Senator Bong Go, Asia’s first Grandmaster Eugene Torre, FIDE Senior Trainer Grandmaster Jayson Gonzales, first Filipina Woman Grandmaster Janelle Mae Frayna, Asian Chess Federation Executive Director Casto Abundo (the only Filipino Class A International Arbiter), Atty. Cliburn Anthony Orbe NCFP Executive Director and the Triangulate PACC International Arbiters namely IA James Infiesto PACC President, IA Reden Cruz, IA Elias Lao together with the PACC Powerhouse Officers – Board of Directors.
