POC board rejects all amendments, except 1

There won’t be much in changes in the Philippine Olympic Committee’s constitution and bylaws.

Abraham Tolentino

That’s because two key amendments that were proposed for inclusion were strongly opposed.

Only the bid to disallow officials from holding positions in more than one national sports association was approved.

And this was ratified during a special, five-hour online meeting of the Executive Board of the POC yesterday morning.

“Since we could not come to an agreement, the constitution stays as is,” said POC president Abraham Tolentino.

Board members could not come to an agreement on the proposal, which sets an age limit of 70 for POC positions.

There’s no word yet on the issue requiring an NSA to be recognized by its International Federation first for it to become a part of the POC family.

The committee, chaired by past POC president Ricky Vargas, also tackled the proposal removing the position of chairman.

But this did not pass approval, even after it was stated that many National Olympic Committees all over the world does not have such a position.

The majority also forwarded a proposal on their own amendment which would remove an immediate past president from the board.

Tolentino said that the many board members decided to draw political lines, with a faction calling themselves “The Group of Seven.”

“I appealed to all to act as one and not as protagonists in a political encounter. Unfortunately, reforms were blocked using the tyranny of numbers. Dating gawi tayo,”added Tolentino.

Members of the POC are seeking approval to implement the age limit of 70, which the International Olympic Committee imposed since 2016.
