The Philippine Sports Commission is set to impose belt-tightening measures next month after the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corp. turned over a remittance of P9 million this month, well below the average take of the government sports body.

Ramon Fernandez
Commissioner Ramon Fernandez said the PSC will convene a board meeting to discuss what measures they will take in their programs for national athletes and coaches with the situation that they are facing.
“We will adjust as time goes on. We'll just have to tighten our belts,” said Fernandez in a radio interview.

The reported low turnover of remittance from the PAGCOR comes when the it has almost ceased operations amidst lockdown measures imposed by the government last March because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We will just have to bite the bullet and see the total picture,” added Fernandez.

The PAGCOR remitted P150.75 million to PSC on March 31, 2020 from its February earnings.

Last month, the remittance went down to around P90 million, before it got cut further to just P9 million.

Overall, PAGCOR has given up to P409.01 million to the government sports agency in the first quarter of 2020 alone.

Fernandez believes that this situation won't have a big effect to national athletes, who are continuously training and preparing to get better when they compete in competitions here and abroad.

“Dahil karamihan sa mga bata, they just want to bring honor to the country,” said Fernandez.
