Cayetano lauds PH’s splendid hosting of world-class events

Senator Alan Peter Cayetano’s unwavering optimism about the Philippines’ capacity to host world-class sporting events is no longer just a belief—it’s a proven reality. This confidence, which once seemed like a long-shot ambition, is now bearing tangible and remarkable fruit. The country’s successful staging of major tournaments has steadily rewritten its sporting narrative, transforming it from a host of regional competitions into a recognized partner for the world’s biggest federations.

Cayetano’s foresight first shone brightly during the 2019 Southeast Asian Games, a monumental event that showcased the Philippines’ ability to manage a multi-sport competition on a grand scale. This success was followed by the 2023 FIBA World Cup, an event that firmly placed the nation on the international sports map. While the Philippines has always been known for its passion for basketball, the FIBA World Cup demonstrated that the country’s capabilities extend far beyond mere fandom. It proved the nation could deliver a hosting job that met and exceeded global standards.

Despite some local sports leagues experiencing fluctuating attendance, the country’s prowess as a host has continued to grow. The ability to successfully stage top-tier international competitions shows a remarkable and consistent progress, proving that the Philippines is more than ready to take on even bigger challenges.

As 2025 draws to a close, the Philippines is preparing for its busiest and most historic stretch yet, welcoming two major tournaments for the very first time.

The Ultimate Test: FIVB Men’s Volleyball World Championship

From September 12 to 28, the Philippines will host the FIVB Men’s Volleyball World Championship. This solo hosting gig, following the country’s consistent and successful staging of the Volleyball Nations League, is considered one of the toughest tests of international hosting. Thirty-two of the world’s best men’s volleyball teams will compete in venues like the Smart Araneta Coliseum and the Mall of Asia Arena, with historic sites like the PhilSports Arena and Rizal Memorial Coliseum serving as training grounds. This event highlights the country’s versatility and readiness to manage a complex, high-stakes tournament on its own.

Making History: FIFA Futsal Women’s World Cup

In a milestone that highlights both versatility and history, the Philippines will host the inaugural FIFA Futsal Women’s World Cup from November 21 to December 7. This event marks the first time the nation has ever staged a FIFA World Cup of any kind. With 16 nations participating, the tournament will be played across two venues—the PhilSports Arena in Pasig City and the Victorias City Coliseum in Negros Occidental—making history and proving that the Philippines can be a true player on the global stage for the world’s most popular sport.

For Cayetano and the many others who share his belief in the country’s sporting potential, these milestones are just the beginning.
